Kristian Craig Robertson multi-instrumentalist and electronic wizard, otherwise known by his pseudonym Capitol K, has enjoyed a remarkable musical career spanning over 13 years in which his sound has metamorphosed from sample chopping, vocal driven electronica to Latin American rhythmically charged Cumbia. Located on a Magic Island on the River Thames, K also records and produces an impressive spectrum of artists at his otherworldly base Studio Plateux, amongst playing synths in freak-beat combo Archie Bronson Outfit and working on his mutant-disco dance band Loose Meat. Currently immersed in a passionate affair with South American dance music, K’s next album Andean dub demonstrates a remarkable maturity and brings together his talent for production, mixing and performance. K weaves in the hypnotic rhythms and melodies of Cumbia with the warm pads and oscillating synths of his former musical self. The end product is a wonderfully cultured well-crafted album that skips between genres and cultures effortlessly, with a couple of tracks appearing on this exclusive hypnotic down-tempo dance Mix Tape Capitol K compiled for SUBJECT!
“I remember distinctly the first time I heard electronic music, about 16 years ago. It just sounded so odd, off the scale from anything else – it really was alien and I became hooked! When I heard Cumbia for the first time I had the same reaction, the sound totaly threw me – just this off kilter rhythm but incredibly simple. I had been playing in a Brazilien band for years and that was all colour and tropic but I could not claim it for my own, I was essentially a visitor. Cumbia was the missing link, all the productions I was hearing from the new school of young producers had this really genuine open experimentation to them I instantly recognized this emotion from my early days of mid late 90’s UK Rave, the days of Reflex and Planet Mu.”
